Which course, and which level
Diploma Programme mathematics is taught as Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI), each at Standard Level and Higher Level. Archie tutors all four, at the same price.
AA: Analysis and Approaches
In the IB’s words, AA “has a strong emphasis on the ability to construct, communicate and justify correct mathematical arguments”. Paper 1 is sat with no technology; Paper 2 allows it.
AI: Applications and Interpretation
AI “emphasizes the meaning of mathematics in context”, with more statistics and modelling. “All external assessments involve the use of technology.”
Standard Level
Two papers of 1 hour 30 minutes, 40% each, plus the exploration at 20%. 150 recommended teaching hours.
Higher Level
Two papers of 2 hours, 30% each, a 1-hour Paper 3 at 20%, plus the exploration at 20%. 240 recommended teaching hours.
A new version is on the way. The IB has published new briefs for both courses marked “First assessment 2029”, so students who begin the Diploma in 2027 should expect the new course. Confirm with your child’s school which version they are on. The guide to IB Maths AA vs AI sets the two courses, and the two versions, side by side.
Taken from the IB’s Diploma Programme subject briefs for Analysis and approaches and Applications and interpretation (first assessments 2021), and the briefs marked first assessment 2029. Checked on 11 October 2026 against archived copies. Cognivia Tutoring is not affiliated with or endorsed by the IB.
The mathematical exploration
The assessment criteria and mark allocations for the exploration are set by the IB and should be read in the version of the subject guide your child’s school is teaching. They are not reproduced here, for the same reason the syllabus is not: they change, and a tutoring page is the wrong place to look them up.
How Cognivia can help with an exploration
Written feedback on an exploration is a separate service from lessons, priced by word count, with detailed written comments returned within 5 days in every case:
Up to 750 words — £50, written comments only.
Up to 1,500 words — £100, including a 30-minute call to go through the comments.
Up to 3,000 words — £200, including a 30-minute call.
On the £100 and £200 tiers the call is included in the price, and is booked and paid for in the same booking, at least 5 days ahead.
Guidance only. Archie never writes any part of the work. The student does the writing and remains responsible for their own work and for their school’s and the IB’s rules on academic integrity.
Lessons are with Archie Dyer, the founder of Cognivia Tutoring and its only tutor. He sat the Diploma himself, which is the short answer to why this page exists.
43 out of 45 in the IB, with 7s in HL Maths, Physics and Economics.
10 A*s at IGCSE.
Second-year Theoretical Physics student at UCL, after a First in his first year.
Tutoring for over two years. Enhanced DBS checked.
Those three HL 7s cover Maths, Physics and Economics, so a student taking more than one of them does not need more than one tutor. Chemistry is covered as well, at SL and HL.
What he will not do is promise a grade. The IB is marked by the IB, and no tutor sits in that room.
How he teaches. In Archie’s words: “I find where the understanding actually breaks down, which is usually two or three topics further back than where the marks were lost, and we rebuild from there. I keep lessons relaxed. I would far rather a student asked me something they think is obvious than sat quietly and nodded.” The free 30-minute trial is the way to judge that for yourself: bring a topic you find difficult. There is more on the About Archie page.
For families at international schools
Students join from the UK and across Europe, so booking from outside London is straightforward:
Online lessons run on Google Meet. The link is in the booking confirmation email, so there is nothing to install.
The booking calendar shows times in the visitor’s own time zone, so an eight o’clock slot means eight o’clock where the student is.
Payment is in pounds sterling, taken by Stripe at booking, by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Families in London can also book in person around Marylebone, for £10 more per lesson. That option is set out on the Marylebone page.
