Which IB subjects does Cognivia tutor?

Cognivia Tutoring covers four IB Diploma subjects at Standard Level and Higher Level: Mathematics (both courses), Physics, Chemistry and Economics. Each has its own page with the course structure set out and sourced.

How are these IB subjects assessed?

Each subject is assessed by written papers set by the IB plus one internal assessment marked by the school. The weightings below are taken from the IB’s own subject briefs, and they are the reason lesson time is usually split between exam technique and the IA.

The IB describes the Diploma itself this way: “Normally, three subjects (and not more than four) are taken at higher level (HL), and the others are taken at standard level (SL). The IB recommends 240 teaching hours for HL subjects and 150 hours for SL.” Alongside the six subjects sit three core elements: the extended essay, theory of knowledge, and creativity, activity, service.

Weightings and the quotation are taken from the IB’s Diploma Programme subject briefs: Mathematics (first assessments 2021), Physics and Chemistry (first assessment 2025) and Economics (first assessments 2022). Each subject page links its brief. Checked on 11 October 2026 against archived copies of those briefs. Cognivia Tutoring is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the IB.

Who you would be working with

Lessons are with Archie Dyer, the founder of Cognivia Tutoring and its only tutor. He sat the Diploma himself.

  • 43 out of 45 in the IB, with 7s in HL Maths, Physics and Economics.
  • 10 A*s at IGCSE.
  • Second-year Theoretical Physics student at UCL, after a First in his first year.
  • Tutoring for over two years. Enhanced DBS checked.

His three Higher Level subjects were Maths, Physics and Economics, so those are the subjects where he can speak from his own exams. Chemistry is taught at SL and HL as well. What he will not do is promise a grade: the IB is marked by the IB.

How he teaches. In Archie’s words: “I find where the understanding actually breaks down, which is usually two or three topics further back than where the marks were lost, and we rebuild from there. I keep lessons relaxed. I would far rather a student asked me something they think is obvious than sat quietly and nodded.” The free 30-minute trial is the way to judge that for yourself: bring a topic you find difficult. There is more on the About Archie page.
